  • Catrina @ BHCC, Oct 2019

    Catrina @ BHCC, Oct 2019

Reception with the Artists: Sunday, October 13, 2019 (5-7 PM). Exhibition on display through November 16, 2019

The Bath House Cultural Center presents the 33rd Annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) art exhibition, October 12-November 16, 2019. The exhibition features Day of the Dead visual art and altars in a variety of media created by local, national and international artists.

The works featured in the 2019 Día de los Muertos exhibition will be inspired by the Day of the Dead character, Catrina, and by the legacy of other prominent women.

Catrina has been an iconic symbol of the Day of the Dead celebration for many years. The character has been seen by people in many different ways throughout her interesting evolution. Catrina first came to life on an etching that was created around 1910 by printmaker José Guadalupe Posada, a highly prominent and respected artist from Mexico. Catrina, a genuine grande dame of death, is one of various comical illustrations of skeletons that were made famous by Posada. On his print, Catrina is depicted as a lavishly elegant woman who wears formal attire with much pride and exuberance.

Although Catrina is now perceived as a cheerful personification of the Day of the Dead, she was originally created as a piece of political satire that mocked people of Mexico who, in the beginning of the 20th century, showed an obsession with European materialism and style and disregarded their own indigenous culture. Catrina later became a symbol of the contrasts between the upper and lower classes of Mexico. In more modern times, however, we see Catrina as a beloved image of the Day of the Dead celebration that represents not only the gleeful nature of the festivity but also the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.

The artists featured in this show include Mirtha Aertker, Karen E. Aguilar, Michelle Akers, Roxanne M. Anderson, Barbara M. Armstrong, Brandin Barón, Jose G. Barriga, Amy Boltrushek, Melanie S. Campbell-Carter, Kathy Chambers, Vicki Charlotta, Rebecca Collins, Oscar Contreras, Lisa Crook, Raúl Cruz, Judy Culbertson, Enrique De Altamirano, Gail M. Delger, Kathleen B. • Portals @ BHCC July 2019

    Portals @ BHCC July 2019

Opening Reception: Saturday, July 6, 2019 (7-9 PM). Featuring music by Len Barnett and Percussions Things. Exhibition on display through August 3, 2019.

For a number of months, fourteen visual artists from the DFW region have worked together to bring about a project titled Portals… An Entrance, a Doorway a Journey. The artwork resulting from this project is being presented as a new exhibition at the Bath House Cultural Center this summer.

The pieces featured in the Portals exhibition, made with a variety of materials and techniques, convey an assortment of views and ideas that are informed by the concept of portals and other types of entrances or passages. One of the first physical elements that serves as a fitting foundation for the artwork is that the shape of all the artists’ frames mimics the architectural design of a window or door. Although all the pieces share this common structural characteristic, the work that was produced is certainly diverse, as artists were asked to interpret the theme in their own personal and unique way, using the media of their choice, and imagining what they might find if they were to pass through a doorway, peek through a window, or take a journey beyond a portal. Among the final pieces are works that explore narratives connected to nature, dreams, family, politics, literature, and fantasy. Also included are abstract works that aim to celebrate the beauty and expressiveness of shapes, colors and textures.

The Portals exhibition includes artwork by Rita Barnard, Vicki Charlotta, Sheila Cunningham, Steve Danner, Jacque Forsher, John Irizarry, Jackie Johnston, Laurie Mahoney, Patricia McMillan, Margo Miller, Christine Smith-Atkins, Evita Tezeno, VET, and Cheryl Vorhis.

This event is EASL's main fundraiser which provides the organization with the money it will use to distribute grants to artists in need. The evening includes an open bar, food, and art to "heist" donated by 150 professional artists. Guests will watch with anticipation as patrons walk away with works of art from some of North Texas' most notable artists. Nowhere else will "criminals" be so appreciated.
